Open Space adds performing arts immersion experience for high school students

Hastings College is expanding its Open Space opportunities this summer by launching Open Space for the Performing Arts, a performing arts immersion experience for high school sophomores and juniors.

NOTE: Open Space for the Visual Arts is for high school juniors and focuses on a variety of visual arts mediums.

Open Space logoOpen Space for the Performing Arts is a selective summer immersion program conducted by the Hastings College Department of Music and Theatre. The eight day, seven night experience is scheduled for Sunday, June 23 through Sunday, June 30, 2019.

The program will accept just 35 students and features a master class experience with Hastings College faculty, focusing on advanced technique and styles within a specific area of music (instrumental, piano, vocal) and theatre (acting, technical theatre).

“Electives” in other areas of the performing arts, from improv to composition to jazz, helps students broaden their experience and gain a more comprehensive understanding of the performing arts.

The week culminates with a performance for family, friends and the community.

“This is a top-tier performing arts experience for the state’s most talented students,” said Dean of Innovation and Creativity Chris Hochstetler. “It’s a great way for students fully immerse themselves in a fun, creative challenge centered on quality instruction in a positive environment, where students will grow their skills and imagination.”

Open Space for the Performing Arts is open to students who have exceptional talent and interest in pursuing music and/or theatre in college, are in good academic standing and can provide the necessary audition materials and a letter of recommendation.

The cost to attend the Performing Arts immersion program is $250 per person. The program, valued at more than $1,000, is underwritten by the Jackson Dinsdale Endowment at the Hastings College Foundation, which is providing this year a $750 scholarship for each selected student. Additional scholarships may be available for students on the free and reduced lunch program.
