LocalGlobal sponsors activities for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

LocalGlobal, a student organization at Hastings College, will host a week of activities for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week beginning Friday, November 11. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week is an annual event on campus dedicated to raising awareness about hunger issues both locally  in Hastings and around the globe.

Throughout the week, volunteers can attend LocalGlobal’s activities to learn more about food insecurity issues, as well as pack meals for distribution primarily in Hastings and Haiti.

“I believe groups like LocalGlobal and events like Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week are extremely important because they’re just one way that we can give back to the community as a whole,” said LaVista, Nebraska, native Alyx Olney, a senior majoring in sociology and co-chair of LocalGlobal. “They are a great example of how a group of people committed to a common goal can accomplish so much more than one person could by working alone.”

The week opens on Friday, November 11, with Hearts and Hands Against Hunger (formerly Kids Against Hunger) meal packing event, with a goal to prepare 65,000 meals primarily for Haiti, and ends Wednesday, November 16 with an OpenTable Sack Lunch Program packing event, with a goal to prepare 3,000 sack lunches for distribution in Hastings.

A complete schedule of events can be found below. All activities are open to the public and are on the Hastings College campus. For directions, go to hastings.edu/maps.
