Hastings College is hosting its second Open Space for the Visual Arts with 35 of the most talented art students from Nebraska and western Iowa. The art immersion program, which runs Sunday, June 2 through Saturday, June 8 on campus, is designed for future artists completing their junior year of high school. It’s a tremendous way to expand the students’ hands on experiences in the arts.
While on campus, students will work directly with Hastings College art professors in glass blowing, ceramics, sculpture, digital media, animation, painting and drawing.
Days will be filled with hands-on applied learning, as well as individual time to create in the region’s preeminent art facility, the Hastings College Jackson Dinsdale Art Center (JDAC). Students live in residence halls on campus during the experience, and have social and other opportunities to engage in the arts throughout the community.
A public showing of the students’ work will be open to their parents and the public in the JDAC from 10:00 a.m. to noon on June 8.
Hastings College faculty selected 35 students to attend Open Space this year in a very competitive application process.

Open Space for the Performing Arts, in which selected students work with Hastings College theatre and music professors in acting, technical theatre, instrumental performance, piano performance and vocal performance, is set for Sunday, June 23 through Sunday, June 30, 2019, on campus. Students selected for that program will be announced in early June.

The Jackson Dinsdale Art Center is an architecturally innovative showplace for the arts and a superb teaching and learning environment for Hastings College students. The 25,000 sq. ft. facility opened in August 2016 and is the premier art center in the region and houses the best college glass studio in the country. The JDAC offers spacious studios, classrooms and gallery space.
