Major league experience for Ninemire

Melissa Ninemire wants to become a video editor for a professional sports team.  Hastings College has been a great fit for her, providing multiple real-world experiences and internships where she can hone her videography and leadership skills.

As Executive Producer for Bronco News Now, the student-run news show, the Broadcasting major from Falcon, Colo., has learned to coordinate and execute all aspects of a live video production. She’s also served on the Hastings College’s multimedia production team for the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, where she experienced the “craziness” of working in a professional production atmosphere with tight deadlines and constant demands for new content.

During summer 2013 internship, she put her major league dreams to the test, interning with Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids.

“At my internship, I had a constant flow of work to get done,” Melissa said. “On days when the team wasn’t playing, I collected press clippings, attended training, observed media interviews with players and coaches and edited press releases.”

On game days, Melissa’s duties included setting up the press box, directing media personnel, taking game notes, and recording and transcribing interviews after the game. In concert with other Rapids public relations staff, she developed podcasts for Rapids fans.

Perhaps most beneficial was the opportunity to work professionals in her field and to learn from them in action.

“Rachel Sweeney, Media Coordinator for the Rapids, has a commanding but friendly presence, especially when working with members of the media and players,” Melissa said. “She is very organized and meticulous about her work.”

The road to the majors is never easy, but Melissa feels she’s on that path.

“This internship was a great place for me to start,” she said.
