Musical based on Studs Terkel book to explore working in America

theatre working a 2013 14During Hastings College’s 2014 January Term (J-Term), students spent the month preparing for a production of “Working: The Musical.”

With a book by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso; music by Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Rodgers and James Taylor; and lyrics by Schwartz, Carnelia, Grant, Miranda, Taylor and Susan Birkenhead, “Working” is based on author Studs Terkel’s 1974 publication “Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do.”

Terkel collected interviews with various working people, and these vignettes are brought to life in an unforgettable kaleidoscope of musical styles.

Performances are scheduled for Thursday, January 30; Friday, January 31; and Saturday, February at 8 p.m., and Sunday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m. in Scott Studio Theatre (806 N. Turner Ave. / map).

This production contains mature language.

The box office opens Tuesday, January 28 and will remain open from noon to 5 p.m. until Friday, January 31. General tickets are $8.00 while seniors and non-Hastings College students can get them for $5. Tickets are free to Hastings College students, faculty and staff and to Crimson Connection members.
