Hastings College to offer students archery, bowling, trapshooting

Starting in the 2013-14 academic year, new student activities at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, include bowling, archery and trapshooting. While the activities will provide exciting experiences for Hastings College students while expanding the College’s offerings, these sports have already provided opportunities for Hastings College to work with community partners, including Pastime Lanes, the Cottonwood Archery Club, the Hastings YMCA and Four Rivers Gun Club.
“Local groups, individuals and businesses have been generous in offering facilities and expertise to make these sports available to Hastings College students,” said Don Jackson ‘70, President of Hastings College. “In turn, our students will be expected to give back to the community. For example, the archery and shooting sports participants will help teach local youth proper technique and best safety practices.”
The Hastings College Bronco Bowling Club will offer scholarships in the fall of 2013, although the goal is ultimately to provide scholarships for students participating in archery and shooting as well. Ron Hergott, a 1982 Hastings College graduate, will serve as Head Coach for the bowling team, with Butch Hogan, a legendary high school bowling coach at Hastings (Neb.) High School, serving as Assistant Coach. Hogan will continue coaching at Hastings High School.
The Hastings College Bronco Archery and Trapshooting clubs, also coached by Hergott, may enter some competitions this spring but expand their schedules as they ramp up next year. With assistance from the Cottonwood Archery Club, the Hastings College Archery Club practices with both 3D and flat targets at the Hastings YMCA. The Trapshooting Club practices trap and skeet shooting at Four Rivers Gun Club southeast of Hastings.
