Hastings College theatre, music departments honor outstanding students

The Hastings College Music and Theatre departments recognized outstanding student work during their end-of-the-year celebrations. Both departments awarded several traditional honors and scholarships specific to their disciplines.

The Music Department’s honors convocation took place on Monday, May 8 in Perkins Auditorium. The event featured musical performances by the Sigma Alpha Iota national women’s music fraternity and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia national men’s music fraternity, and the singing of the Alma Mater led by Dr. Fritz Mountford. Awards and scholarships presented include:

  • Cale Arent, a first year student from Murdock, Nebraska — Chorus of the Plains Scholarship
  • Bethany Baker, a junior from Alliance, Nebraska — Gordon L. and Mary Ohlsson Endowed Music Scholarship
  • Karli Cabrera, a junior from Pawnee City, Nebraska — Nebraska Association of Music Educators Collegiate Concert Representative
  • Adam Camp, a first year student from Erie, Colorado — Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Outstanding Freshman Scholarship and Chorus of the Plains Scholarships
  • Timothy Ellis, a first year student from Red Cloud, Nebraska — Chorus of the Plains Scholarships
  • Jerod Fox, a sophomore from Newton, Kansas — Chorus of the Plains Scholarships
  • Kouper Griffin, a junior from Fairbury, Nebraska — Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Collegiate Honor Award
  • Anna Griggs, a senior from Centennial, Colorado — Sigma Alpha Iota Collegiate Honor Award
  • Zaidya Hirschman, a senior from Norfolk, Nebraska — James King Outstanding Bandsman Award and Duane E. Johnson Outstanding Contributor in Music Award
  • Colt Hoselton, a senior from Juniata, Nebraska — Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Outstanding Sinfonian
  • Nathan Jensen, a senior from Hastings, Nebraska — Gordon L. and Mary Ohlsson Endowed Music Scholarship

  • Jacob Nienhueser, a senior from Juniata, Nebraska  — Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholastic Award and Outstanding Senior in Music Award
  • Erin Petry, a junior from Plattsmouth, Nebraska — Sigma Alpha Iota Jennifer Kathleen Cady Scholarship
  • Melville Seagren, a senior from Bloomfield, Nebraska — Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Collegiate Honor Award
  • Katherine Welk, a senior from Grand Island, Nebraska — Nebraska Association of Music Educators Accompanist

The Theatre Department presented its awards on Wednesday, May 10 during the department’s annual Beaux Arts Theatre Dinner. The evening saw the initiation of new members into the Alpha Psi Omega theater honorary and the distribution of the colored masks, including the Purple Mask, which honors the artistic and academic excellence of junior and seniors from the department.   • Miranda Aschoff, a sophomore from Hastings, Nebraska — Scarlet Mask
