Web Design at Hastings College

At the core of every good website is a solid message, sound architecture and user-friendly design. Web design at Hastings College builds your expertise in all these areas and gives you an understanding of other key components of web design. In line with that philosophy, our faculty challenge you to develop an understanding of code, as well as strong graphic design, photography and communication skills.

Messaging, communication theory, advertising, marketing, multimedia, social media, brand identity, writing, art and computer science — these are all the core elements in a web designer’s toolbox, and they’re all waiting for you at Hastings. Throw in a bit of business sense and you’ll be ready to jump into new opportunities after graduation or launch your own firm.

Web design at Hastings College funnels through digital media and other courses in our Department of Visual Arts, as well as courses from departments across campus. Businesses of all sizes, non-profits, advertising agencies — and more — look for graduates who understand graphic design and the technical aspects of websites and the elements to build them. The depth and expertise of our Department of Visual Arts faculty help you develop your web design skills so you'll graduate with broad design, client management and technical expertise and know-how. And the hands-on experience through our Center for Applied Media Arts and internships get you ready to impress future employers with your skills and resume.

Since every student has a specific path or career in mind, you'll take a professional development course your first semester.

This course helps you explore your goals and work with a professor to map out the best classes across campus to take for the web design career you have in mind. Courses in everything from professional writing to the fundamentals of business, and communication studies to marketing, are all options and there to help you create not just any professional path, but the path that belongs to you.

Graduate with experience

Students studying web design at Hastings College get the nuts and bolts know-how in the classroom, from graphic design software to content management systems to analytics. But that's just part of the value in your time at Hastings.

You’ll be out across campus developing your design skills, building your experience with video production and motion graphics and gaining insight into social media and it's impact on website traffic and analytics. Our Center for Applied Media Arts provides all these experiences plus opportunities to create for community organizations and non-profits who are looking for support and creativity.
