Western Illinois University, Bachelor of Fine Arts – Drawing & Painting
Prior to joining Hastings College in 2017, Sarah Swist taught courses in the Visual Art Studies program at Penn State Altoona and created architectural models for the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh. At Penn State University Park, she taught drawing and served as a digital fabrication assistant. She was the recipient of the Fund for Excellence in Graduate Recruitment Award in 2012 and the Creative Achievement Award in 2014.
Originally from Southern California, Swist has lived and shown art across the country. New work features vintage fabric scraps, kitschy trinkets, nostalgic family heirlooms, and piles of thrift-store treasures. Current areas of creative interest include DIY culture and the vibrant attributes of everyday objects.
In addition to making her own studio work, Swist is one half of Bubblegum & Whiskey. This collaborative, interdisciplinary project explores the function and aesthetics of handmade objects in rural American towns. Recent pieces have been featured on Youngspace.com and with Treat Gallery in New York City.
