Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary loan is a cooperative resource sharing service that enables us to borrow materials we do not own from other libraries.

Who is eligible to use our ILL service?
Interlibrary loan services are available to all Hastings College students, faculty, and staff.

What is the cost?
Interlibrary loan requests are placed free of charge to students, faculty/departments and staff. Perkins Library continues to incur costs for these interlibrary loans; therefore, your good judgment and restraint in requesting only those items you truly need and reasonably expect to use is greatly appreciated.

What materials are available through ILL?
A wide range of materials is generally available, although individual lending libraries may have policies that restrict the loan of certain items such as dissertations, audio visual material, manuscripts or reference books. We will do our best to obtain the items you request.

Courtesy
Interlibrary loan is a courtesy extended from one library to another. We ask our patrons to respond in kind by searching Perkins Library resources first, respecting the lending library’s rules, making prompt use of the material, and returning the materials on time. Misuse of interlibrary loan jeopardizes the college’s borrowing privileges.

How do I place an ILL request?
Interlibrary loan request forms (yellow for articles and white for books) are available at the circulation desk of Perkins Library and in printable form by downloading (above).

How long does it take to receive interlibrary loaned material?
Although your interlibrary loan may arrive sooner, it’s a good idea to allow seven to 10 days. Please keep in mind that delivery is dependent on numerous factors including location of lending library, mail service, type of item (journal article, video, etc.) and method of delivery. Plan ahead so that requests are placed as far in advance of deadlines as is possible.

How will I be notified when my ILL arrives?
You will be emailed or phoned, as per the preference you’ve indicated on your completed request form.

Where do I collect/return my ILL?
ILLs are placed at the circulation desk at Perkins Library; your name will be on the “Reserve” whiteboard at the desk. Journal articles may be campus-mailed to you at your request. Return borrowed items to Perkins Library just as you would our own materials. Each borrowed item that is returnable will have a green band on it; this band must be intact upon return.

How long may I keep the material?
Due dates are determined by the lending library, so they vary. Most lenders allow three to four weeks.

Is my ILL renewable?
Renewals occur at the discretion of the lending library. Renewal requests must be received (via phone, in-person or email) before the due date.

Liability
Borrowers are responsible for the return of borrowed materials to Perkins Library by the lender’s due date and will be assessed any fees by the lending library for overdue materials and the cost of replacement for damaged, lost or unreturned items.
