From blocking to the booth, ad lib to cues, the Theatre Department at Hastings College helps you graduate with a love of theatre and important life-long skills.
As a theatre major or minor – or as part of your college experience by participating – you'll contribute to all aspects of theatre production, from writing original scripts and directing to creating costumes and designing sets. Our faculty’s professional experiences cut across multiple stages, from traditional theatre to films to commercials. Their connections open doors to exciting internships and opportunities!
Our Scott Studio Theatre’s black box stage provides an intimate, flexible setting that lets creativity flow from performers to the packed house. Its design is also perfect for preparing you to work in film. It’s simply a sensational venue!
Our professors recognize a working artist today needs to crossover among various media, so they’ve created performance and design classes to serve as a strong base for entrance into all performing arts.
In addition to four to five full campus productions each year, opportunities abound to collaborate with groups in the Hastings area, such as a Shakespeare with Noodles youth troupe and the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center. January Term experiences include you’ll work with professional artists to provide you with exposure to choreographers and other artists currently in the field.
You'll also discover Hastings College Summerstage, which provides pre-professional paid positions to students who create a comedy melodrama or musical with area theatre alumni and community performers in a summer-stock setting. It's a great opportunity!
You'll find Hastings College Theatre Arts majors in internships, apprenticeships and fellowships with a host of organizations, including the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va.; Dixon Place in New York City; Walt Disney World; Disneyland; Theatre West in Scottsbluff, Neb; and many other companies, including several in Chicago.
