Dr. Debra Rhodes

Dr. Debra Rhodes is a reed specialist, teaching studio saxophone, clarinet and double reeds, chamber music and music history. In addition to her college duties, Rhodes maintains an active teaching studio out of her home. Her students at all levels have won numerous awards and competitions in state, regional and national events.

Prior to her appointment to Hastings in 1992, Rhodes taught at California State University-Dominguez Hills and Pacific Christian College and worked as a freelance teacher and performer in the Los Angeles area. She has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Ojai Music Festival Orchestra under such prestigious conductors as Pierre Boulez, John Adams and David Allen Miller. She was also a member of the Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet, performing concerts throughout the U.S. and Canada under the auspices of the Community Concert program. Debra has performed solo recitals across the United States and has presented clinics and performances at numerous conventions of the North American Saxophone Alliance and the World Saxophone Congress. She is currently a member of the Sempre Saxophone Quartet which regularly commission new compositions and performs recitals nationwide. The quartet recently released their first album – Music of William Schmidt on the Centaur Records label.

Rhodes received her Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Music Performance degrees and her Doctor of Arts degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Northern Colorado under saxophonist Roger Greenberg. She earned her Master’s degree in Saxophone Performance from The University of Texas at Austin. Rhodes is also an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene and serves as Associate Pastor at Lakeside Community Church in Hastings, Nebraska.
