Hastings College, the only liberal arts college in the Midwest – if not the country – with a rodeo club, has been fast out of the shoot! Since its founding in 2008, the Hastings College Broncos Rodeo Club has proven successful against larger, more established programs throughout the Great Plains Region.
In 2012, the men’s team finished fifth in the region while the women’s team finished 6th. In addition, Richard Coats, Hastings, Neb., won the regional championship in steer wrestling and finished 13th at the College National Finals Rodeo.
Others finishing in the top 15 regionally included Kyle Sanderson ‘12 of Chambers, Neb., (6th in steer wrestling, 14th in team roping); Jace Bowhay ’13 of Beatrice, Neb., (11th in steer wrestling); Taylor Meeske ‘14 of Colorado Springs, Colo., (10th in team roping), and Samantha Chytka ‘12 of Broken Bow, Neb., (6th in goat tying). Several others finished in the top 16-20 slots in the region.
Team member Sam Chytka received statewide recognition for leadership when she was named Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2013. In that position, she represents Nebraska and the sport of rodeo, locally and nationally.
Under the leadership of coach Justen Nokes, an active and successful pair steer-wrestler himself, the team practices just a few miles from campus, where many students also board their horses.
Hastings College offers scholarships for rodeo and pays the initial college rodeo membership fee. Club members are responsible for covering their own rodeo entry fees, travel expenses and animal care and feeding expenses.
