NOTICE OF FACULTY POSITION IN SOCIOLOGY (Tenure Track)
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Late August, 2013.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (ABD considered) in Sociology/Criminal Justice
THE POSITION: Hastings College has a position open for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Sociology. The department seeks a broadly trained sociologist with an applied emphasis and background in criminal justice. The successful candidate will possess the ability to conduct applied research as well as teach courses with an applied focus that emphasizes experiential learning. Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Criminal Justice, Corrections, Criminology, and Law Enforcement as well as a variety of traditional sociology courses as needed to support department programs. Hastings College is committed to excellence in teaching undergraduates and faculty scholarship and is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and a multicultural learning environment. The applicant is expected to have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment but ABD’s will be considered. Teaching load is four courses per semester and one course during the January Term. Hastings College gives highest priority to teaching effectiveness. Willingness to advise, counsel, and work closely with students is essential. This is a tenure-track appointment. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience. A comprehensive employee benefit package, including a sabbatical program is provided.
THE DEPARTMENT: Hastings College offers B.A. degrees with four areas of emphasis: General Sociology, Criminal Justice, Peace, Justice and Social Change, and Human Services Administration. The major focus of the department is to promote sociological practice. Students are provided the opportunity to learn to effectively use the tools of sociology (theory, research methods, and statistical analysis) to address (application) social issues effecting individuals, organizations and the larger community. The sociology faculty includes two full-time professors, one half-time professor and one part-time professor and adjuncts as needed. The department also directs a Social Science Research Center, which involves students in applied social science research projects.
THE COLLEGE: Founded in 1882, Hastings College is an independent, coeducational, Presbyterian-related liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1100 students. The student/faculty ratio is 13/1. The median ACT composite of entering students is about 24. The College operates on a 4-1-4 calendar with a January Term that runs for 3 weeks.
THE COMMUNITY: Hastings (Approximate pop. 25,000) is an attractive residential community in South-Central Nebraska, 100 miles west of Lincoln, and 15 minutes south of Interstate 80. The city enjoys good public and private schools, offers excellent professional and community services, and serves as a cultural center for a large surrounding area.
