The Chemistry Department offers a sequence of courses designed to prepare the student to meet entrance requirements to graduate schools in Chemistry and to the many related professional programs.
In addition, the course offerings serve as support courses for the biology, physics, pre-engineering, and other science majors.
The chemistry lab and learning center has 10 PC computers used with interface hardware and software for data acquisition and manipulation and for study aid in courses.
The chemistry labs offer first-hand experience with impressive equipment. Students will learn to use the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and fourier transform infrared spectrometer, not by just watching, but by running their own samples. Students also take part in research projects using high-performance liquid chromatograph, gas chromatograph and a variety of electroanalytic systems.
Class sizes are small and all classes are taught by professors, never by a graduate student.
Students have the opportunity to present projects at the Nebraska Academy of sciences and do internships and summer research at leading universities.
Interdisciplinary opportunities are available between the Chemistry Department and other departments on campus.
An interim course with the Physics Department travels to Chicago area to visit Fermi National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, as well as other scientific and cultural locations.
