Workshop descriptions are noted below. For college credit, registration and full payment will be completed on-site just prior to the first workshop session. Checks should be made payable to Hastings College. Credit cards are not accepted at this time. Additional questions about workshop content should be directed to the hosting ESU.
| ED 588P – Problems Facing Today’s Youth | 3 hours |
| This course is designed to educate participants about both the variety of social problems that students face in today’s society, and the possible reason for these problems. Participants will discuss some of the nation’s top reasons for stress among today’s youth along with the physical, mental/emotional, and relational impact of these regarding education. During the course of this class, participants will acquire strategies and interventions that will assist them when working with students in the school setting. | |

| ED 588LD – Explicit Instruction: Supporting Literacy Development & Success | 1 hour |
| Explicit instruction is systematic, direct, engaging, and success oriented—and has been shown to promote achievement for all students. Participants will develop a common language and basic strategies that lay the foundation for explicit instruction. This two-day training provides special and general education teachers the essential tools to implement explicit instruction as well as vocabulary and comprehension strategies in any content area in grades Kindergarten through eight. | |
| ED588WT – Teaching With Web 2.0 Tools | 3 hours |
| Web 2.0 is all about utilizing new ways to create, collaborate, edit, and share content online. The best part is, it is easy to use!! There is no need to download, and teachers and students can master many of these tools in minutes. Come learn about the latest and greatest tools available, and how to incorporate them into your classroom effectively. | |
| ED 588LS – miLearning Summer Institute | 3 hours |
| Focus in this course is on creating inquiry-based learning environments where students become motivated, engaged, and self-directed learners. Participants will explore the impact of technology, the value of a ‘new face’ for classroom culture development, and engage in developing skills related to an inquiry-based learning. | |
| ED 588TM – Teaching Music In-Joy! | 1 hour |
| Participants will engage in experiences designed to rekindle purpose, passion and enthusiasm for teaching music to children. The work will focus on incorporating, awe, wonder and high expectations and identify how these contribute to enthusiasm and classroom management. Participants will add tools to their music teacher toolbox that will illuminate and enhance their teaching experience and student learning. | |

Participants will learn about cloud based storage and sharing to work on collaborative projects in the classroom. The following topics will be offered, but not limited to:Day 1: Google tools for learning; blogs, podcasts and YouTube in the classroom | |
| ED 588TT – Tech Tools That Bring Learning to Life | 1 hour |
| This course will prepare participants to bring student learning to life by using a variety of digital tools such as animation, video publishing, and social networking in an interactive classroom. Teachers will create lesson plans and projects that will engage learners and expand their world beyond the four walls of the classroom. | |

| ED 588SR – Summer Orientation About Rivers (SOAR) | 2-3 hours |
| SOAR’s purpose is to get children out on the land—and in the water—to discover the great diversity of life that exists just beyond their own back yards. By using local field sites and an interdisciplinary curriculum including natural and physical science, history, art, agriculture, language arts and music, SOAR aims to create a deeper appreciation for where we live in the minds of our children. Enrollment in this course will allow educators to assist in field and lab activities for these children. The experience will culminate in the development of a project plan to be implemented in their own classroom. | |

| ED 588BF – The Big 5 of Reading Instruction | 3 hours |
| The 5 components of effective reading instruction include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This course is designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the research behind the components, how to evaluate the core reading series to determine if enhancement of a component is necessary, and to effectively teach these components. The desired outcome is direct application to instructional practice. | |
| ED 588TI – Blending Technology and Instruction to Improve Student Achievement | 3 hours |
| Teachers will be able to independently use their learning to design and deliver high-quality courses/units in a blended learning environment by integrating technology and increasing opportunities for student achievement. | |
| ED 588EL – Meeting the Needs of English Language Learners | 3 hours |
| Meeting the Needs of English Language Learners is designed to provide teachers with research-based tools and strategies that reach ELLs and close the achievement gap. Some of these strategies include using nonlinguistic representations, developing academic language, cooperative learning, and using cues, questions and advanced organizers. Participants will directly apply these tools and strategies to their current teaching practices. This course also has integrated online components to enhance the learning. | |
| ED 588Q – Quantum Learning | 3 hours |
| Quantum Learning is a multi-sensory, multi-intelligence, brain-compatible package, application, and practical approach to learning. | ED 588ADL – Advancing Literacy for English Language Learners | 3 hours |
| Advancing Literacy for English Language Learners is designed to provide teachers with research-based tools and strategies to improve the achievement of ELLs in reading and writing. Participants will be able to identify essential differences between ELLs and native English-speaking students as they learn to read and write, and address these differences through the use of research-based strategies. | |
| ED 588EIS – Essential Instructional Strategies | 3 hours |
| Researchers at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) have identified instructional strategies that are most likely to improve student achievement across all content areas and across all grade levels. This course is designed to identify these strategies, and provide practical applications for classroom implementation. | |
| ED 589MC – The Music and Movement Connection | 3 hours |
| Join in our celebration of music and movement with games and songs from around the globe that will invigorate and delight your students. You will develop lessons to take back and use in your classroom in the fall. | |
