Pursue Your Passion

HC Stories 2008-2009

April Christensen

Sophomore April Christensen, Hardy, Neb., is the perfect example of a Hastings College student pursuing her passion. In April’s case though, she has two passions, biology and piano.

April Christensen“I’m double majoring in piano performance and biology,” said April. “I was hoping I would like one more than the other, but that didn’t happen. At Hastings College I could do both things I like. I looked at bigger schools,” she said, “And when I mentioned that I wanted to double major, they told me that wasn’t possible, that I had to pick one or the other. When I visited here, I found I could do both.”

April has excelled in the classroom and is involved in a number of extracurricular activities. She recently won the Nebraska Music Teachers Association – Collegiate Piano Competition, competing against students from all colleges in Nebraska.

"As a high school student, April studied piano with me at Hastings College,” said Ruth Moore, professor of music.  “It was obvious that her talent, potential, and passion for music would make her the "ideal" student. Needless to say, I was thrilled when she selected Hastings College out of the myriad of schools she was considering."

April ChristensenWhat does April plan to do with a biology major? “I hope to get a master’s degree in environmental science,” April said. “I’m vice president of the Student Environmental Action Coalition, and we’ve done all sorts of projects on campus including adding recycling bins, investigating the possibility of a tray less cafeteria, and coordinating Earth Day activities. I also hope to do an internship next summer in the environmental science field, and see if that’s a good career choice for me.”

April is registered for the “going green” January interim trip to Germany. Students will study the high standards set by the Germans in planning for sustainable economic growth and the wellness of its people.

"Early in her high school years, April was identified by the music department as an outstanding student musician and a potential "good fit" for Hastings College,” said Dr. Robin Koozer, professor of music and chair of the department. “April is very talented and her interests are extremely diverse.  Studies in the liberal arts and the variety of opportunities afforded April made Hastings College a great choice for her."
