(Hastings, Neb.) – Dr. Gilbert Hinga has accepted an appointment to serve as Hastings College’s next Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). His appointment is effective July 1, 2012.
“Gilbert is a dynamic and talented addition to the Hastings College community,” said Dennis Trotter, President of Hastings College. “He arrives with an established record of preparing students for meaningful lives beyond their college career. I am eager to partner with Gilbert to enhance the culture of student success as an integral part of the Hastings College experience.”
Dr. Hinga currently serves Associate Vice President of Student Life at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where his responsibilities include strategic planning, integrating curricular and co-curricular experiences and enhancing a student learning environment.
“I am delighted to be joining the HC community,” said Dr. Hinga. “I have felt a palpable spirit of genuineness and camaraderie that has reverberated throughout my interactions with the HC community. As a product of a small, private, residential, liberal arts, Presbyterian-affiliated college myself, I have personal insight into how effective an institution like Hastings can be in preparing students for success in our pluralistic society and in a global economy.
I am really looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and joining the excellent team that President Trotter has assembled to help catapult Hastings College into even greater heights of success.”
Dr. Hinga earned a B.A. in psychology from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina where he also began his career in student affairs. Later, he earned a Psy.D. in psychology from Wright State University in Ohio and worked at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
The VPSA position opened at Hastings College when Dr. Ron Chesbrough left in early September 2011 to become President of St. Charles Community College in Missouri. The Reverend Joan McCarthy, who has served as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs during the remainder of the 2011/2012 academic year, will resume her position as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, effective July 1, 2012.
Trotter recognizes the efforts of faculty, trustees, staff and students during the successful national search process.
“I appreciate the search committee’s hard work in identifying such a dynamic and talented Vice President for Student Affairs,” said Trotter.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,150 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
