Hastings College Forensics team places 16th at national tournament

(Hastings, Neb.) – While competing against 83 schools across the country, the Hastings College Bronco Forensics team place 16th in overall sweepstakes at the American Forensics Association's National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET) hosted from April 6-9, 2012, in San Marcos, Texas, at Texas State University. All 14 team members who qualified in 41 events for the tournament contributed points to the sweepstakes award in their campaign to improve upon their 18th place finish during the previous year.
Corey Reutlinger, a senior from Lexington, Neb., broke into the quarter-final round in persuasive speaking – the third largest event category at this year's national competition. Reutlinger was earned an All-American Award, a holistic honor based on service, academics and competitive success in forensics. Only 14-17 speakers receive this distinction each year.

Miranda Klugesherz, a freshman from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Nikko Zurawski, a freshman from Bennett, Colo.
Sierra Walker, a freshman from Gering, Neb.
The Bronco Forensics team has always seen national success at the American Forensics Association-National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET). The team has been ranked in the Top 20 for 13 of the last 14 years and in the Top 15 for five of the last eight years. The team has had 11 Individual Sweepstakes Award Winners since 1990. Since 1998, 46 students have achieved a quarterfinal at the AFA-NIET, 23 students have advanced to semifinals, 14 students have placed in finals at nationals and four speeches have achieved national championships. Seven students have been named to the AFA-All American Team. The team is ranked as the number one undergraduate college for the last decade at the AFA-NIET (Sternhagen, 2010).
