(Hastings, Neb.)  –  For 25 years, Dr. Sara Jane Gardner taught in both the English and the history departments during her career at Hastings College.  Each year, to honor her legacy in the classroom, Hastings College selects a student majoring in English or history to receive the Sara Jane Gardner Memorial Scholarship.  As part of the scholarship, the award-winning student must present a lecture on the topic of his or her choice.

The scholarship recipient for the 2011-2012 academic year is Preston Peterson, a senior from Broken Bow, Neb., who on Monday, April 16 at 10 a.m. in Room C of Hazelrigg Student Union (705 9th St.), will present "Connecting Broken Bow, Nebraska and National Issues in Gilded Age America."  This lecture will be free and open to the public.

Peterson will use his hometown as a case study for the impact of national issues on Great Plains communities.  His study begins in 1875, seven years prior to Broken Bow’s establishment, continues through the community’s development during the Gilded Age and concludes in 1917 as the U.S. enters World War I.

Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
