(Hastings, Neb.) – Each year, Hastings College awards up to four $5,000 Rick Wilson Memorial Scholarships to incoming freshman residing and attending high school in Dawson County. Selected on the basis of their academic achievement, leadership ability and community involvement, the 2012 recipients are Katherine Arias of Lexington High School; Payton Prall of Gothenburg High School; Stephanie Finnegan of Cozad High School; and Aaron Pierce of Cozad High School. Provided they maintain 3.00 grade point averages, the students will remain eligible to renew the scholarships throughout their college careers.
About the Rick Wilson Memorial Scholarships
After lettering in golf and actively participating in music activities at Cozad High School, the late Rick Wilson began his college career at Hastings College in the fall semester of 1969. During that semester, he earned a perfect grade point average and was on the dean’s list. His promising life was cut short when he was stricken with leukemia and died on March 4, 1970.
In his son’s honor, prominent Cozad businessman D. Lloyd Wilson established an endowed scholarship and later provided funds to build the Wilson Mathematics and Computer Science Center.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,190 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
