(Hastings, Neb.) – At a time when other institutions are cutting their debate programs, the Hastings College Bronco Forensics team has made concerted efforts to strengthen its competitiveness in parliamentary debate. During the Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensics Association (NIFA) State Tournament held at the University of Nebraska-Kearney on February 17-18, the team’s efforts became clear as it brought home its first-ever state debate championship.

With the debate competition championship and a 3rd place finish in the individual events competition, the HC Forensics team took 2nd place overall in the tournament.

Led by the team of Aaron Geringer, a senior from Wheatland, Wyo., and Trevor Brass, a junior from Lincoln, Neb., who won the debate competition, HC also earned debate points as a hybrid team comprised of Trevor Stith, a junior from Newcastle, Wyo., and Robert Friedman, a senior attending UNK, placed 2nd and as HC freshmen Nikko Zurawski of Bennett, Colo., and Sierra Walker of Gering, Neb., advanced to the semi-final round.

Zurawski earned the 2nd place speaker award for parliamentary debate followed by
Geringer, who won the 3rd place speaker award.

During the individual events competition on February 18, Hastings College placed 3rd overall, with two 1st place finishes. Brass earned a state championship in impromptu speaking, and Mike Dvorak, a senior from Muskogee, Okla., won extemporaneous speaking.

With his combined performances in debate and individual events competitions, Brass won the Kevin Heineman Pentathlon Award. Given to the individual speaker pentathlon sweepstakes winner, the award is named for the late Hastings College Director of Forensics. Brass is the first HC student to win the award since 2000.

Additionally, Jose Jimenez, a sophomore from Lexington, Neb., received the Spirit of NIFA Award for forensics students who demonstrate leadership and welcoming personalities. Several other HC students were nominated for the award.
