Hastings College mourns the death of “Dean Irene” Moerer

(Hastings, Neb.) – With sadness, Hastings College announces the death of former Associate Dean of Students, Irene Moerer. The 89-year old resident of Johnson, Neb., known affectionately as “Dean Irene,” died on February 4, 2012.
At her induction into the Pro Rege Society -- Hastings College’s highest non-academic honor, Miss Moerer was recognized as having “a reputation as an able administrator, a strong leader, and a highly effective personal and academic counselor with an unusual gift for sorting out students’ problems and needs.” Her 26-year tenure spanned from 1961-1987.
Miss Moerer’s presence remains on campus. Each year, Taylor Hall bestows an award in her honor to the resident who best demonstrated the dorm’s spirit and Miss Moerer’s leadership. In Hurley-McDonald, a portrait of Miss Moerer, painted by Jeongin Suh, hangs. Also, the garden immediately south of the Gray Center is dedicated to her.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11 at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church near Auburn, Neb. Memorials may be sent to St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church or to the family’s choice through Hall Family Memorial Services in Auburn.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,150 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
