Hastings College Chapel Schedule for February 2012

(Hastings, Neb.) – Each Wednesday at 10 a.m., members of the Hastings College community meet in French Memorial Chapel (800 N. Turner Ave.) for voluntary chapel services. The chapel service schedule for this February includes speakers for Black History Month and Lent. These services are open to the larger public and free.
The February 2012 schedule includes the following:
Wednesday, Feb. 1 – The Rev. Dr. Laurie Ferguson
The Hastings College Choir will perform at this service held concurrently with the 2012 Winter Pastors’ School for the Presbytery of Central Nebraska. This worship service will include Holy Communion.
Biography
Dr. Laurie J. Ferguson is a Presbyterian minister, professional certified coach and licensed psychologist. The focus of her work is at the ‘fork in the road’ moments with people who want to make meaningful changes in their lives. She teaches and consults about developing resilience for leaders and organizations. Dr. Ferguson is currently a Senior Research Fellow for Auburn Seminary in the area of coaching and adjunct lecturer at Union Seminary.
Wednesday, Feb. 8 – Leah and Dave Preston, Missionaries
Raised as missionary kids, the Prestons will discuss their life-long service as missionaries.
Biography
The Prestons have served with Wycliffe Bible Translators for over 27 years, in Australia, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa. As part of the support team for Wycliffe, their jobs have been to free up Bible Translators to do their work. Currently, they are running the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) office and opening their home as a guesthouse in Kempton Park, South Africa. Dave Preston’s step-mother, Harriet Preston, resides in Hastings, Neb.
Wednesday, Feb. 15 – The Rev. Karla Cooper, Chaplain/Coordinator of Service Programs at Doane College
As part of HC’s celebration of Black History Month, the Rev. Cooper will present a sermon entitled “When Blacks were Green.”
Biography
The Reverend Karla J. Cooper, the seventh of eight children of Joel and Kay Cooper, ordained an Itinerant Elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, serves as the proud pastor of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. She has Dual Standing in the United Church of Christ and serves as Chaplain/Coordinator of Service Programs at Doane College. She is also an adjunct instructor in the Department of Education at Doane.
She is a graduate of Eden Theological Seminary where she received a Master's of Divinity and studied abroad as part of a travel seminar to India studying in three seminaries, Gurukul Lutheran Theological Seminary in Chennai; Tamilnadu Theological Seminary and United Theological Seminary in Bangalore. Reverend Cooper also worked with the Church of South India. Because of her work in India, the African Methodist Episcopal Church will establish itself in South India in November 2007. She is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication and completed studies in a Masters of Public Administration Degree with an emphasis in public policy. She is presently pursuing her PhD/Post Baccalaureate studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Wednesday, Feb. 22 – Ash Wednesday: The Rev. Father Joseph Walsh, Pastor at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Hastings, Neb.
Father Walsh will distribute ashes during this service. All are invited to participate.
Wednesday, Feb. 29 – The Rev. Dr. David B. McCarthy, Chaplain to Hastings College and Associate Professor of Religion
Biography
The Rev. Dr. David B. McCarthy earned a B.A. with a double major in French and Religion from Carleton College, a Master of Divinity from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in French from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University.
Before coming to Hastings in 2001, he served churches in New York and North Carolina, and taught at Harvard and Duke University. He has written over thirty book chapters and articles, and has served the Presbyterian Church (USA) in a variety of capacities; most recently, he completed a term as the Moderator of the Presbytery of Central Nebraska. He is interested in the diverse history of Christianity, ranging from the first to the twenty-first century.
David and his wife Joan met in seminary; they have two teen-age daughters who keep them busy attending school choir, band, and orchestra concerts, and competitive swim meets (where they help run the timing computer and manage the concession booth). David enjoys his volunteer work with international refugees who have come to Hastings; in his free time, he appreciates reading, music, and travel.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,150 students.
