(Hastings, Neb.) – On Tuesday, Feb. 7, Hastings College will celebrate author Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday with festivities at Perkins Library (705 E. 7th Street). Beginning at 12 noon in the library’s Perkins Room, the library staff and faculty from the Languages and Literatures Department will serve foods associated with Dickens’ novels, present biographical information about the author and show clips from modern adaptations and parodies of his works. Additionally, members of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honorary society, will read excerpts from “Oliver Twist” and “Great Expectations.” This event is free and open to the public.
“[Charles] Dickens was the J.K. Rowling of his day--writing exciting, moving stories for readers of all ages--and it's not an accident that there is something very like Oliver Twist, the mistreated orphan, about Harry Potter at the beginning of her first book,” Dr. Antje Anderson, Professor of English and Chair of the Languages and Literatures Department, said.
Dr. Anderson, whose specialty is works by Dickens and other Victorian authors, continued: “This enormous popularity, the ‘Dickens phenomenon’, is something that required reading in high school does not really get at, but if I read Dickens aloud, I still ‘get it’ every time. Many others readers do, too. That's why he has not gone out of print, why new Dickens miniseries and movies come out every year, and why Dickens groups and societies all over the world celebrate his 200th birth year throughout 2012.”
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,150 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
