Former Hastings College First Lady dies at 100

(Hastings, Neb.) – Hastings College is saddened to announce that Eleanor (Zike) Maxson, wife of former Hastings College President Dr. Theron B. Maxson, died on January 11, 2012, in Sitka, Alaska. She was 100 years old.
Dr. Maxson, who served as president from 1956-1972, died in 1989 at age 78.
A Kearney, Neb., native, she and her husband traveled overseas extensively. They were proud to have helped establish Payup University in Ching Mai, Thailand.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Maxson, and various children and grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on January 18 at the Sitka United Methodist Church. A celebration of life ceremony will take place at Pioneers Home Chapel at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salvation Army.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,150 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
