(Hastings, Neb.) – To celebrate Hispanic culture and raise awareness about immigration issues, Hastings College’s Center for Vocation, Faith, and Service (CVFS), the Hastings College Student Association and the Risk-Taking Mission and Justice Team of the United Methodist Church will sponsor several Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) activities.  These events are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Nebraska’s first Hispanic Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) pastor, Liz Conner, will preach during the 10 a.m. Chapel service in French Memorial Chapel (800 N. Turner Ave.)  Following this service will be a noon luncheon in Steinhart Lounge of the Hazelrigg Student Union (HSU) (705 E. 9th St.) during which pan de muerto (Day of the Dead bread) will be served.

Wednesday’s festivities wrap up with a forum to discuss the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, federal legislation which would grant a path to citizenship for certain alien minors if they met specific requirements.  This forum starts at 7 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel.

On Thursday, Nov.3, the groups will sponsor a 365-Day Fast to raise awareness about the DREAM Act.  The fast will be broken at 7 p.m. in HSU-Room C.  To make reservations for the fast event, contact Rachel Lee at rlee@hastings.edu by Tuesday, Nov. 1.
