(Hastings, Neb.) – In conjunction with the American Library Association’s (ALA) Banned Book week, several Hastings College organizations will host a Banned Books Read Out on Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Perkins Library (705 E. 7th St.), starting at noon.

During this annual free event, participants will have the opportunity to read aloud from challenged or banned books they bring.  Listeners are welcome, too.

“Perkins Library and its cosponsors annually observe Banned Books Week because the event is a celebration of the intellectual freedom we, as democratic citizens, enjoy,” Susan Franklin, HC Associate Professor of Library Sciences and Public Services, said.

“The event raises awareness on our campus for the importance of protecting that freedom and reminds us that other viewpoints must be equally protected, even when they are unorthodox or unpopular or controversial.”

This event is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta International English Honorary, the Future Educators Association and Perkins Library.
