(Hastings, Neb.) – On Tuesday, September 13,, 2011, Hastings College marks its 129th birthday with a Founders Day celebration. Festivities, to be held at the Heartwell Park Bridge, will include remarks by new President Dennis Trotter and games for HC students, faculty and staff.
“Our Founders Day is an opportunity to celebrate the heritage and traditions of community that have formed the foundation of this college since it sprang from this treeless, windswept prairie nearly 130 years ago,” President Trotter said.
“Indeed, I propose that Founders Day celebrations become an important part of our campus culture each year.”
Hastings College convened its first class on September 13, 1882. Forty-four students met on the second floor of the Chilcote Building, at the corner of First Street and Hastings Avenue in Downtown Hastings. Classes were taught here for two years until the college’s first building was completed. That structure – McCormick Hall – remains in use and stands as a monument to the vision of HC’s founders.
Prior to joining Hastings College on June 1, 2011, Mr. Dennis Trotter served as the Vice President for College Advancement at Pitzer College (CA) since 2008, following four years at Franklin and Marshall College (PA) where he was Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing/Dean of Admission. Prior to his last two assignments, Mr. Trotter served as the Chief Admission Officer at Coe College (IA), St. Martin’s College (WA), and Sheldon Jackson College (AK). He is currently working toward the completion of his Ph.D. at the Claremont Graduate University’s School of Educational Studies with an emphasis in Higher Education Leadership. He completed his M.B.A. at the University of Iowa and his undergraduate degree at Whitworth College (WA). Trotter is married to Trina Johnsten.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,190 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
