Hastings College named to national community service honor roll
For the fourth year in a row, Hastings College has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its exemplary community service, innovative service-learning programs and demonstrated commitment to strengthening the community.
Hastings College students have served approximately 141,000 hours from the academic year 2003-04 through 2009-10. In the last year, students served 24,000 hours in the community, with one-third of those hours directly connected to classes taught at Hastings College. According to the Independent Sector, a non-profit agency, the value of this service to Nebraska in dollar amounts was in excess of $400,000.
The Corporation for National and Community Service, which has administered the Honor Roll since 2006, admitted a total of 641 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth. Of that total, 511 were named to the Honor Roll, 114 received the recognition of Honor Roll with distinction, 11 were identified as finalists, and six received the Presidential Award.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,190 students. Hastings College was named among “America’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report, a “Best in the Midwest” by The Princeton Review, and a “Best Buy in College Education” by Barron’s.
