Hastings College announces 2011 Judy Sandeen Service Award Recipients
The Hastings College Peer HIV Education Organization (PHIVE-O) received the Judy Sandeen Service Award at Hastings College Annual National Volunteer Week Celebration on April 20, 2011.

Present to receive the award were students Dani Bachman, Grand Island, Neb., Meghan Duryea, Lincoln, Neb., Colton Kerrigan, Berthoud, Colo., Chelsi Pinegar, Bennington, Neb., Jocelyn Schade, Hastings, Neb., and Jenny Sharrick, Hastings, Neb. Other students in PHIVE-O are Helené Flaxbeard, Bennington, Neb., Doug Fruin, Grand Island, Neb., Shelia Hansen Snell, North Platte, Neb., Mark Hewitt, Omaha, Neb., Rachel Heylmun, Plattsmouth, Neb., Kayla Mancini, Hastings, Neb., Kelsi Potts, Cambridge, Neb., Megan Puckett, Lincoln, Neb., and Kevin Wright, Mansfield, Penn. The recipients of the award were presented with a plaque and $500 to donate to the cause of their choice. Faculty/staff advisors for the group are Kittie Grace and Judy Sandeen. This was the fifth year the award has been presented. The award honors the 30 years of service Judy Sandeen as the Director of Campus Health Services.
The award is sponsored by the Hastings College Center for Vocation, Faith, and Service (formerly the Vocation and Values Program), which encourages students, faculty and staff to serve their communities in faithful and dedicated ways. Organizer, Dr. Jean Heriot, Director of Service Learning, announced that Hastings College students have served approximately 141,000 hours from the academic year 2003-04 through 2009-10. In the last year, students served 24,000 hours in the community, with one-third of those hours directly connected to classes taught at Hastings College. According to the Independent Sector, a non-profit agency, the value of this service to Nebraska in dollar amounts was in excess of $400,000.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
