Hastings College speaker/documentary event to feature “Scrappers”
Hastings College to host a PBS speaker/documentary event “Scrappers: A History of the WWII Scrap-metal Drive in Nebraska” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11 in Wilson Auditorium. A discussion with the co-directors will follow film screening. This event is free and open to the public.
The feature documentary “Scrappers: How the Heartland Won World War II” highlights the 1942 scrap iron drive in Nebraska and contrasts those efforts to today’s war on terror. The film is produced and directed by Seton Hall University professors Thomas Rondinella and James Kimble, who is a Nebraska native.
The 1942 Nebraska Scrap Metal Drive, spurred by the nation’s need for metal to jump start the production of planes, tanks, ships and munitions, brought together Nebraska’s residents for a common cause and ultimately played a part in changing the course of World War II for the United States.
