Hastings College Forensics shines again in Halloween weekend tournament

The Hastings College Forensics team took second place at the Doane College tournament, Oct. 30-31. The team brought home 35 awards and earned second place both days of the tournament. Junior Mike Dvorak, Muskogee, Okla., added one more event for the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament. Senior Curt Casper, Lexington, Neb., was the overall top speaker of the tournament and first-year student Jared Buskirk, Holdrege, Neb., received his first championship of his collegiate career. Plus, junior Aaron Geringer, Wheatland, Wyo., picked up a Championship in Persuasive Speaking. Below are the results of the tournament, which consisted of schools from Nebraska and Kansas. Students are followed by their hometowns and tournament placements.

The Bronco Forensics team has often seen national success at the American Forensics Association-National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET). The team has been ranked in the top 20 for 11 of the last 12 years and the top 15 for five of the last six years. The team is ranked third in the nation in All-Americans with 11. Since 1998, 44 students have achieved a quarterfinal at the AFA-NIET, 24 students have advanced to semifinals, 13 students have placed in finals at nationals and four speeches have achieved championships. Six students have been named to the AFA-All American Team.
This year the AFA-NIET will be held at the University of Nebraska-Kearney on April 1st through April 3rd.
