Hastings College Forensics awarded in tough tournament
The Hastings College Forensics team continued their winning way this past weekend in one of the toughest tournaments so far this year, held at Creighton University. The team brought home 14 awards. First-year students Jenny Linne, Bailey, Colo., and Jared Buskirk, Holdrege, Neb., received their first collegiate final rounds. Other teams at the tournament included Rice University, Ohio University and national champion Western Kentucky. Here are the results:
Saturday, October 23
Senior Curt Casper, Lexington, Neb., received 6th place in Extemporaneous Speaking
Junior Mike Dvorak, Muskogee, Okla., received 5th place in Impromptu Speaking
Junior Makayla Jones, Grand Island, Neb., received 5th place in Program Oral Interpretation and was a semi-finalist in Prose Interpretation
Junior Aaron Geringer, Wheatland, Wyo., received 6th place in Persuasive Speaking
Sophomore Matt Cashoili, Hastings, Neb., received 3rd place in Dramatic Interpretation and was a semi-finalist in Prose Interpretation
Sophomore Trevor Brass, Lincoln, Neb., received 4th place in Impromptu Speaking and 6th place in Informative Speaking
First-year student Jenny Linne, Bailey, Colo., received 7th place in Program Oral Interpretation
Sunday, October 24
Junior Patrick White, Omaha, Neb., received 4th place in Prose Interpretation
Junior Mike Dvorak, Muskogee, Okla., received a semi-finalist award in Impromptu Speaking
First-year student Jenny Linne, Bailey, Colo., received 5th place in Program Oral Interpretation
First-year student Jared Buskirk, Holdrege, Neb., received 6th place in After Dinning Speaking
The Bronco Forensics team has often seen national success at the American Forensics Association-National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET). The team has been ranked in the Top 20 for 11 of the last 12 years and the Top 15 for five of the last six years. The team is also ranked third in the nation in All-Americans with 11. Since 1998, 44 students have achieved a quarterfinal at the AFA-NIET, 24 students have advanced to semifinals, 13 students have placed in finals at nationals and four speeches have achieved championships. Six students have been named to the AFA All-American Team.
