Hastings College Welcomes Alcott Elementary Students
Hastings College welcomes nearly 50 Alcott Elementary second-grade students for a full-day college experience from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday, April 26 on the Hastings College campus.
The students will attend classes, eat lunch in the cafeteria and hear a lecture by Kim Brown, the sister of Marc Brown, author of the popular children’s books and PBS series featuring Arthur the Aardvark and friends. The students will receive free HC drawstring bags.
Several HC students will be assisting with the day’s events.
This event is funded by a Hastings College Envision Grant and the J.S. Kemper Foundation of Chicago.
Schedule for Monday, April 26
9 a.m.–11 a.m.
“English 101: Love Your Library” with Assistant Professor of Library Science Susan Franklin in Perkins Library. Hastings College President Dr. Phil Dudley will read to the kids.
“Biology 101: Go Green” in the Greenhouse and Outdoors with Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Amy Morris in the Morrison-Reeves Science Center.
11:15 a.m.
Lunch at Hazelrigg Student Union
12:30 p.m.
“Meet the Real D.W.” – Lecture by Kim Brown, sister of children’s author Marc Brown, in the Hazelrigg Student Union Rooms A and B
Tour of the Gray Center for Communication Arts and Lynn Farrell Arena
2 p.m.
“Economics 101: The Economics of Pet Care” with Associate Professors of Economics Dr. Douglas Kinnear and Dr. Amy Black in Fleharty Educational Center. A certified therapy dog and handler will assist with the class.
