Oct. 6 - Hastings College Alliance to present “Fearless” photographer

Hastings College Alliance presents photographer Jeff Sheng at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8 in French Memorial Chapel. Sheng is an artist, activist and educator from Los Angeles, Calif. He is the creator of the photo exhibit “Fearless” that features high school and collegiate athletes who openly self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT).

Pieces from Sheng’s exhibit will be on display around the Hastings College campus throughout the month of October to share the message that students can be both athletes and GLBT.

In 2006, Sheng turned his photo exhibit into the Fearless Campus Tour that has visited more than 30 schools nationwide. Goals of the Fearless Campus Tour are: to promote the use of photography to effectively educate the public and eliminate prejudice and discrimination; to increase acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in high schools and colleges; to decrease homophobia in athletics; and to help educators, administrators and coaches meet the needs of GLBT youth in their schools, teams and communities.

The Hastings College Alliance teaches and promotes safety, dignity, respect and acceptance for students of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 64 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to more than 1,150 students.
