July 12 - HC Broncos' ballpark gets new funds from Kellogg's Frosted Flakes
The city of Hastings has received $15,000 from the Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes “Plant a Seed” contest for historic Duncan Field, home-field for the Hastings College Broncos.
Duncan Field was one of only 30 athletic fields chosen from across the country to receive funds through the program. Fields were chosen based on online votes submitted over the past four months and consideration from contest judges. Duncan Field received nearly 60,000 online votes.
Renovations planned for Duncan Field include improvements to locker rooms, dugouts, concession stands and restrooms. Built in 1941, the field has been home to the 1956-59 Hastings Giants, a D-class Nebraska State League team that brought 28,000 fans to Duncan Field at one time, and the 1959 American Legion National Championship with 23,000 fans in attendance. Known for its deep outfield surrounded by a red brick wall,
Duncan field is used today for Hastings College baseball, St. Cecilia High School football and several local legion baseball teams.
Home of the Broncos, Hastings College is a private, four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1882, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Hastings College received the 2009 GPAC All-Sports Trophy for the best overall performance in 19 conference sports, and 53 Broncos were named Academic All-American this year.
