June 27, 2005 - Hastings College receives Calvin Institute grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hastings, Neb., June 27, 2005 -- Hastings College received a grant for $19,988 from the Calvin Institute’s Worship Renewal Grants Program. The grant provides resources for students to participate in a year-long consultation with local pastors, musicians and lay leaders. Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, located in Grand Rapids, Mich., has awarded grants for six years, generating interest from nearly every part of North America and a variety of denominations. This year, nearly $700,000 was awarded to 54 churches and organizations from a pool of 150 proposals.

The Rev. Dr. David B. McCarthy, assistant professor of religion and chaplain to the college, is director of the Hastings College project. He will be assisted by Adam White, coordinator of Chapel Worship Band.

According to McCarthy, the grant will provide monetary resources for a workshop to explore shifting cultural contexts of worship and to identify a theology of worship that is rooted in the past and open to the future. During the year, students will work with five local congregations of various denominations, attending their services, and discussing worship traditions with church leaders. Students will than collaborate with pastors, musicians, and lay leaders to plan and lead worship in the congregations. Hastings College has a weekly worship service, open to all denominations. Grant dollars will allow for the discussion of unity themes and diversity in worship, and view how music and worship can unify Christians on campus. The year of study and consultation will conclude with a retreat.

The Worship Renewal Grant is made possible with funds provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. Founded in 1937, the Endowment’s major areas of concern are community development, education and religion.

“This year, we were especially encouraged by the number of proposals from congregations who seek to discover new ways to worship as the Body of Christ across barriers of age, gender, race, and language,” said Betty Grit, program manager of the Worship Renewal Grants Program.
