February 8, 2005 - Hastings College to host Religion in Life Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hastings, Neb., February 8, 2005 -- The Hastings College Religion in Life Committee will sponsor the annual Religion in Life Week, Monday-Friday, Feb. 21-25. This year’s theme focuses on science and religion. Guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Robert John Russell, founder and director of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences and professor of theology and science in residence at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, Calif.

Events are at 7:30 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel. They are free and open to the public.

Monday, Feb. 21, screening of American Preview: Monkey Trial. This PBS production reexamines the famous John Scopes trial and offers a new perspective on the role that Nebraska politician William Jennings Bryan played in the trial regarding teaching evolution in the public schools. Christine Lesiak, writer, producer, and director of American Preview: Monkey Trial, will be available to take questions following the screening. Lesiak is an executive producer at Nebraska ETV.

Tuesday, Feb. 22, Russell will address “The Role of Philosophy and Theology in Relativity and Cosmology.”

Wednesday, Feb. 23, Russell will address “Evolution, Natural Theodicy and ‘New Creation’ Eschatology.”

Thursday, Feb. 24, Hastings College professors will present a panel discussion on science and religion moderated by Dr. Dan Deffenbaugh, assistant professor of religion and philosophy. Panel members include: Dr. Steve Bever, associate professor of physics; Dr. Neil Heckman, assistant professor of chemistry; Dr. John Kuehn, assistant professor of biology; Dr. Amy Morris, assistant professor of biology; and Dr. Lee Wigert, professor of psychology.

The Religion and Life Committee is a sub-committee of the Hastings College Student Association.
