May 16, 2005 - Hastings College announces Commencement speakers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hastings, Neb., May 16, 2005 -- Hastings College’s 119th Commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m. in Lynn Farrell Arena, Osborne Family Sports Complex, 800 E. 12th St. Doors will open at 9 a.m.

There are 230 students who are candidates for bachelor’s degrees, and 15 candidates for master of arts in teaching degrees.

Featured speaker will be Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, Harry R. Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College, Demorest, Ga., and adjunct professor of Christian spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Ga. At the ceremony, Brown Taylor will receive an honorary doctor of divinity degree.

Also receiving honorary degrees will be Dr. Ken Rhodus, retiring vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Dr. Philip Jordon, retiring professor of history.

Rev. Dr. Trace Haythorn, assistant professor of religion and director of Christian ministry at Hastings College, will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon, Friday, May 20, at 6 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 621 N. Lincoln Ave.

Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor is an Episcopal priest who has had a distinguished career as preacher, educator, and author of books and articles on religious subjects.

Recognized by Newsweek as “one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English language,” she has lectured on preaching at Yale, Duke, and Princeton universities.

Brown Taylor earned a bachelor of arts degree in religion cum laude from Emory University and a master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School. She has honorary degrees from Piedmont College, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, Virginia Theological Seminary, Colgate University, and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. Before becoming a full-time teacher in 1997, she spent 15 years in parish ministry.

Brown Taylor has published 10 books, including The Seeds of Heaven (2004), Speaking of Sin: The Lost Language of Salvation (2000), The Luminous Web: Essays on Science and Religion (2000), and Home By Another Way (1999). Her book Leaving Church: A Love Story will be published by Harper San Francisco in 2006. A columnist for The Christian Century and a commentator for Georgia Public Radio, she has written articles for such well-regarded publications as Journal for Preachers and Pastoral Psychology. Her work also was selected for inclusion in Best Christian Writing 2002 and Best Spiritual Writing 1999.

This past year, Hastings College published her essay, “The Work of Being Human,” in its collection The Meaning of Work, a publication supported by a grant from The Lilly Endowment Inc.

Rev. Dr. Trace Haythorn coordinates the Vocation and Values Program at Hastings College, an effort funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. Joining the Hastings College faculty in 2003, Haythorn previously was associate pastor for adult education at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tenn. Haythorn also served churches in Rochester, N.Y., and Dallas, Texas. For one year, he was interim associate pastor at Toorak Uniting Church in Melbourne, Australia. He was responsible for Christian education programming, youth ministry, adult education, and worship leadership.

Haythorn completed a bachelor of arts degree at Austin College, majoring in business and psychology; a master of divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in cultural foundation of education at Syracuse University. In 1992, he was ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Haythorn is on the advisory board of the Social Witness Policy Task Force and chair of the Disabilities Task Force for the Presbyterian Church (USA). From 1998 to 2000, he was co-director of Montreat Youth Conferences (MYC III and IV) in Montreat, N.C.
