May 27 - Hastings College grad selected for program in U.S. Congress

Andrew Goodwin, a 2009 Hastings College graduate from Aurora, Colo., is among 12 students from across the nation to be selected as 2009 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars.

The nine-week program places students with an interest in issues affecting racial and ethnic minorities and underserved communities to work as staff in a congressional office in Washington, D.C., and learn about federal legislative procedure and current health policy issues. The scholars will participate in seminars and site visits and produce health policy research addressing problems faced by disadvantaged populations.

Goodwin, who majored in Business Administration and Communication Studies at Hastings College, will be placed in the congressional office of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas. Goodwin is also a 2009 Hastings College Bronco Award winner.

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation established the Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program at Howard University to honor the legacy of former Foundation Trustee and Congresswoman Barbara Jordan – the first African American woman elected to Congress from Texas.
