Hastings College students help plan benefit for Sudanese family seeking citizenship

(Hastings, Neb.) – Afternoon Tea, a benefit to help the Peter Duang family gain citizenship, will be from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings.

The Duang family has faced many challenges. Peter Duang and his wife, Nyareak, were forced to flee their homeland nine years ago after Peter lost part of his arm due to the fighting in Sudan. Later, they had to flee their refugee camp in Ethiopia due to more violence.

Soon after seeking refuge in the United States, Peter and Nyareak moved to Hastings with their three children who were born in Ethiopia, Duang Tang, Nyabong and Septer. The Duang family has been active in the community and the First Presbyterian Church for several years. The couple has had five more children, all of whom attend Hastings Public Schools.

The process to become an American citizen can be daunting, requiring long hours of study and high fees. Peter Duang gained his citizenship in 2008, and his wife is currently studying for the test. Although Peter has citizenship, the Duangs’ three oldest children must pay $460 each and submit paperwork to receive their documentation.

Despite their hurdles, the Duang family is committed to doing whatever it takes to gain citizenship for every member of the family. The couple wants their children to grow up with the safety that being an American citizen ensures.

Hastings College students, the First Presbyterian Church and various other community members have joined together to provide this benefit for the Duang family. Cost to attend is $10 per person. Reservations are preferred, but tickets will be sold at the door. Attendees are asked to bring their own tea service (cup and saucer). Homemade food and live music will be provided. The Hastings College Vocation and Values Program and the First Presbyterian Church are sponsoring the event.

For reservations contact HC student Jessica Thompson at jlthompson@hastings.edu or call her at 303.503.7706. For those who can’t attend and would like to donate, send contributions to the First Presbyterian Church and indicate the funds are for the Peter Duang family.
