Thom Scholars are selected on academic achievement, a desire to serve the church and willingness to participate in campus religious programming. Scholars must also pursue a Christian ministry minor. Scholars are also required to live in campus housing for four years, participate in a yearly chapel retreat, attend a local congregation of their choosing, read Christian vocation material during the summer and help promote the college’s Vocation and Values Program.

Thom Christian Ministry Scholarships are funded by LeRoy and Jean Thom of Hastings, Neb. Thom is owner and president of T-L Irrigation Company. He was a member of the Hastings College Board of Trustees for 18 years, and served as chair of the Building and Grounds Committee. Thom also served on numerous other boards, including City National Bank of Hastings, First Commerce Group, Inc., of Lincoln, Neb. and the Nebraska Water Resources Association.

In 1990, Thom was awarded the President’s Award at Hastings College, and, in 1999, he was inducted in the college’s Pro Rege Society. He and his wife received a Citizenship Award from the United Way of South Central Nebraska.
