Dec. 1, 2008 - Hastings College to observe World AIDS Day
Hastings College PHIVE-O (Peer HIV Education Organization), will observe World AIDS Day through a week-long series of events. This is the 17th year the college has observed the day.
The events are free and open to the public.
• An AIDS booth will be set up in Hazelrigg Student Union during the lunch hour, Monday through Friday. Students will have the opportunity to play an interactive on-line game.
• A special chapel service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m., in French Memorial Chapel. Hastings College graduate Alex Peterson will talk about his experience working with HIV/AIDS in various communities. Dr. Jonathan Sokasits, Hastings College professor of music, will provide special piano music.
• Galen Spears, Grand Island, Neb., a man living with HIV, will talk about his experience, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 12 p.m., Hazelrigg Student Union, Room C.
• A candlelight vigil will take place Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., in Perkins Auditorium, Fuhr Hall of Music. Hot cocoa, chai tea, coffee and cookies will be provided following the vigil.
World AIDS Day, founded in 1988, is Monday, Dec. 1. The day honors those who have died as a result of AIDS, and supports those who are living with the disease. People are encouraged to rededicate themselves to HIV/AIDS knowledge and prevention, and to work toward a world without AIDS.
