Nov. 12, 2008 - Hastings College Alliance to observe Transgender Awareness Week

The Hastings College Alliance organization will observe the second annual Transgender Awareness Week, Monday – Friday, Nov. 17 – 21.

Events are free and open to the public.

Activities will take place regarding what it means to be transgender or transsexual, and what concerns and issues transgender individuals face. Information will be available in Hazelrigg Student Union lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the week.

A vigil will be held in French Memorial Chapel, Monday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., in memory of transgender people who have been discriminated against, hurt, or killed because of their gender identity or gender expression.

Ryan Sallans, Lincoln, Neb., a transgender activist, public speaker and consultant on transgender health care, will present “Strength Through Stories: Transgender History,” Thursday, Nov. 20 (national Transgender Day of Remembrance), at 7:30 p.m., also in French Memorial Chapel.

Alliance is a student group that promotes and teaches safety, dignity, respect, and acceptance for students of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expression.
