Oct. 24, 2008 - Hastings College to host religion and politics forum

Two Hastings College alumni and a current student will participate in a religion and politics forum, Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel.

The forum is open to the public.

Participants, who will present short papers examining the role of religion in American politics, include: Steven Neal ’08, director of youth ministry at First Lutheran Church (ELCA), Kearney, Neb.; Adam White ’00, associate pastor at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Neb.; and Nathan Tramp, a Hastings College senior from Norfolk, Neb.

Neal will examine the appropriate role of political activism in faith settings. White will present a thesis regarding the ironic undercutting of religious formation in political spheres, and Tramp will examine the place of religion in public education.

Following the presentations, participants will engage in conversation with the audience on issues they raised and on the interaction between religion and politics in general.

The forum is funded and organized by the college’s Vocation and Values Program.

For more information, contact Rev. Dr. Wm. Carter Aikin, director of the Vocation and Values Program, 402-461-7769, or caikin@hastings.edu.
