May 12, 2006 - Hastings College honors faculty, students, friends at convocation

            Hastings College faculty, students and friends were recognized today at the annual Honors Convocation in French Memorial Chapel.            Don Pohlmann, Hastings, Neb., received the college’s President’s Award. A highly skilled piano technician, he has served the college’s music department for nearly 50 years. Pohlmann, who retires this year, also tune pianos in area churches, schools and homes. He began tuning pianos in 1948 following graduation from the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children Who are Blind or Visually Impaired, in Nebraska City. In 1957, Pohlmann began tuning the college’s Steinway pianos. He also tunes pianos for Hastings Public Schools and for Concordia University in Seward.            Senior Maggie Koozer, Hastings, Neb., was awarded the $20,000 Jeffery Wallace Ellis Educational Trust Scholarship.  Competition was limited to Nebraska residents in the top 10 percent of the senior class at Hastings College who intend to use the grant for study toward a graduate degree or certificate in a post graduate program beginning in the fall of 2006.  The late Mrs. Lloyd Ellis, who resided in Hastings, and her son, Dr. Lloyd Ellis, Jr., of Salon, Ohio, established the educational trust in 1986 to “encourage industry, moral purpose and intellectual growth among young Nebraska people.” Koozer is the daughter of Robin and Ann Koozer.             Dr. Renee Laegreid received the Faculty Achievement Award. All full-time faculty are eligible for this award, which includes a $2,500 cash award provided by Sodexho food service. The recipient must have demonstrated significant and meritorious achievement in teaching. Students, faculty and staff make the nominations.             Laegreid, assistant professor of history, has been a full-time faculty member since 2003. She earned a bachelor of arts degree at Washington State University, a master’s degree at Wesleyan University, and a doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.             Dr. Anne Fairbanks received the Vondrak Outstanding Advisor Award. Full-time faculty and staff with academic advising duties are eligible for this honor, which includes a $1,000 cash award. The recipient must have demonstrated high standards in academic advising and outstanding service to the campus community.             Fairbanks, associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of English, completed a bachelor of arts degree at Carleton College, a master’s degree at Brown University, and a doctoral degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has been a member of the Hastings College faculty since 1985.              Dr. David Cooke received the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award, funded by Hal Dittmer ’62, Sacramento, Calif., chair of the Hastings College Board of Trustees. The $5,000 award is presented to a faculty member who has dedicated at least 15 years of professional service to Hastings College. The winner also must demonstrate a sustained commitment to quality teaching and to campus and community service.            Cooke is professor of mathematics and computer science and chair of the department. A faculty member since 1989, he completed a bachelor of science degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a doctoral degree at the University of Minnesota.             Chosen as the 2006-07 Artist Lecture Symposium (ALS) invited faculty lecturers were Tony Hobson and Laegreid. The lecturers are nominated by faculty members and selected by a vote of the student body. Hobson is instructor of physical education and head women’s basketball coach. A graduate of Hastings College, he completed a master’s degree at the United States Sports Academy. Hobson has been a member of the faculty since 2000.
