April 21, 2006 - Hastings College to present Academic Showcase Day, speaker will open event
Hastings College Alpha Chi academic honor society and the Artist Lecture Series are sponsoring the second annual Academic Showcase Day, Wednesday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Dr. Robert Hemenway, president of the University of Kansas, Lawrence, will open the event with a lecture Tuesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel. Hemenway, who attended Hastings College, will address: “Living Many Lives: Zora Neale Hurston and the Liberal Arts.” The public is invited to the lecture and to attend Wednesday’s presentations. Student presentations will take place in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A & B; Perkins Auditorium, Fuhr Hall of Music; and Wilson Center Auditorium. Thirty-three students will present a variety of academic topics and art work at this event. Winner of the fifth annual sermon contest, Amanda Phillips, senior, daughter of Arthur and Melinda Phillips, Waco, Neb., will speak at a 10 a.m. service in French Memorial Chapel. Her message is titled: “God Has the Last Word.” From 1 to 1:30 p.m., a tour of the set for the theatre production Skin of Our Teeth will take place in Scott Studio Theatre. Dr. Doug Kinnear, assistant professor of economics, is coordinating the event with the help of Academic Showcase committee members: Dr. Dan Wiley, assistant professor of English; Sharon Brooks, associate professor of communication arts and English; and Dr. Anne Fairbanks, associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of English. Four students are also on the committee: Angela Knodel, senior, Steven/Susan Knodel, Idalia, Colo.; Ann Goding, senior, Timothy/Jane Goding, Oxford, Neb.; Keian Kirkegaard, junior, Donald/Deborah Kirkegaard, Centennial, Colo.; and Rachel Rittenbach, senior, Perry/Laurie Rittenbach, Omaha, Neb. In January, students submitted proposals, which included a short summary of their presentation. Each student was required to have a faculty sponsor who wrote a letter of support. Proposals were reviewed by the committee for final selection in March.
Students will be allowed 20 minutes for each presentation, followed by a discussion and question and answer time. Faculty members will serve as moderators.
