April 12, 2006 - Three to be inducted in Hastings College’s Pro Rege Society

Three individuals will be inducted as members of Hastings College’s Pro Rege Society at the 10th annual dinner and induction ceremony at Lochland Country Club in Hastings, Tuesday, April 25.             Membership in the Pro Rege Society is the highest non-academic recognition that Hastings College bestows.            The 2006 inductees, all from Hastings, are Dr. Dennis C. Storer, Dr. Charles H. Evans, and Calvin R. Johnson.             Criteria for selection may include, but is not limited to, extraordinary service to Hastings College, significant philanthropic contributions and/or unusual commitment to the college over an extended period of time.            The evening begins at 6:30 p.m., and includes a black-tie dinner, tributes by the Hastings College Music Department and the induction ceremony.             Professor Emeritus Dr. Dennis C. Storer was a member of the Hastings College political science and sociology departments for 33 years. He retired in 2001, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.             Storer chaired the political science department, the International Education Coordinating Committee, the Artist Lecture Series National Speakers Committee, and the Judicial Review Board. For 22 years, he served as adviser for the Hays Fulbright Fellowship program. Storer was twice recognized as Alpha Chi Outstanding Faculty member, was chosen three times to deliver the Invited Faculty Lecture, and also received the Sodexho Faculty Achievement Award.             Storer was appointed by the governor to serve on the Nebraska Educational Facilities Authority for two terms, coordinated the Adams County CROP Walk and served three terms as president of the Hastings International Exchange Organization.             Storer was instrumental in establishing a college/community sister city exchange with Ozu, Japan, and subsequently visited Japan on numerous occasions. He was a Japan Seminar Fellow and was a member of a study team that evaluated exchange opportunities for Hastings College students. A sabbatical in 1999 took him to Japan, where he studied the changing role of Japanese women.             A native of Hammond, Ind., Storer earned a bachelor’s degree at Baker University, Baldwin City, Kan.; a master’s degree at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.; and a doctoral degree at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.  He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves for five years. Evans, Hastings College professor emeritus, served the institution for 32 years as a professor of political science. He chaired the department from 1966 until his retirement in 1998. Evans then was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.             Evans worked diligently with the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholar program. Beginning in 1976, he was responsible for guiding 37 students through the rigorous application process, with 20 of those selected as finalists, four selected as alternates, and nine winning the award.  Few other colleges have had such a distinguished record.             Evans was instrumental in the creation of the Hastings College Faculty Senate and subsequently served two terms, including one year as president. For two years, he was faculty representative to the Board of Trustees. Other accolades include being chosen as Outstanding Academic Advisor of the Year and selected to present an Invited Faculty Lecture.             Evans continues to play a vital role in the Hastings community. He is vice president of Adams County Senior Services and is on the governing board of the Midland Area Agency on Aging. Previously, Evans was president of Hastings Noon Rotary Club, president of Hastings Area United Way, and chair of the Nebraska Commission on Aging. He has been an officer in his church and was a member of the Nebraska Judicial Resources Commission.             A native of Arapahoe, Neb., Evans graduated cum laude from Hastings College. He completed a master’s degree at the University of Oregon, Eugene, and a doctoral degree at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Evans and his wife, Georgie, have three children and seven grandchildren.             For the past 19 years, Calvin R. Johnson has served as a member of the Hastings College Board of Trustees. He was appointed to the Board in 1987, then from 1994 to 2004, served as chair.             Johnson saw the completion of several major construction projects including the Osborne Family Sports Complex, Barrett Alumni Center, Batchelder General Services Building, Wilson Center and Bronco Village Apartments.             Following his mother’s death in 1995, Johnson and other family members established the Pearl Johnson Scholarship which provides financial assistance to students majoring in education. He also initiated the Cal and Jane Johnson Fund for Campus Beautification, and through this fund, purchased a bronze statue for the campus. A second bronze is being designed and will enhance the campus landscape.             As president of Johnson Imperial Homes, Inc., he was influential in building more than 1,400 homes in the tri-city area and developed many commercial projects. He also had business interests in building materials, contracting and cattle ranching.             Johnson has served on the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Board since 1989, and from 1997 to 2002, he was chair. For many years, he volunteered his time with the American Legion’s athletic programs. He was active with the Hastings Chamber of Commerce and served on numerous other local boards.
