March 28, 2006 - Hastings College to host jazz festival

Hastings College will host the annual high school jazz festival Monday and Tuesday, April 3 and 4. Fourteen high school jazz bands will work with clinicians and perform in concert, Monday, at 8 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public. The concert will open with the Hastings College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Debra McKim. The group will play a variety of swing, Latin and rock-fusion tunes for big bands and jazz combos. Special jazz music will be provided by the Doug Talley Quartet. Based in Kansas City, the quartet features Doug Talley on the saxophone, Wayne Hawkins on the piano, Tim Brewer on bass and Keith Kavanaugh on drums. The ensemble has performed across the country, and individually the musicians have prolific jazz careers. High school bands participating in the jazz festival include: Beatrice, Boone Central (Albion), Crete, Elkhorn, Grand Island, Grand Island Northwest, Gretna, Lawrence-Nelson, Lincoln Southwest, Norris, Papillion-LaVista, Perkins County (Grant), Pius X (Lincoln), and Platteview.
